Hitachi Nuclear Energy Europe Ltd

Our role in Wylfa Newydd

Hitachi Nuclear Energy Europe is currently leading Hitachi's work in Menter Newydd - a joint venture with Bechtel and JGC.

Menter Newydd was formed in 2016 to deliver Front End Engineering and Design support to Horizon Nuclear Power, for their nuclear new build project at Wylfa Newydd on the Isle of Anglesey.

Working under an Early Contractor Engagement (ECE) contract, Menter Newydd is undertaking a programme of construction planning and project preparation for Horizon, ahead of a major role in the construction, expected to begin around 2019.

As a leading partner in Menter Newydd, Hitachi Nuclear Energy Europe is working to support deployment of the UK ABWR technology – the latest incarnation of the tried and tested ABWR design - to the UK. Once operational, 2 ABWR reactors will provide enough secure, low-carbon, 24/7 power to supply some 5 million UK homes.

Though Horizon Nuclear Power is itself currently a 100% Hitachi subsidiary, Horizon sits within Hitachi's Global Nuclear Energy division, and operates wholly separately from HNE.
